In addition to Joe DiMaggio many players including future Hall of Famers like Bob Feller, Hank Greenberg, and Ted Williams. As a matter of fact, more than 4500 professional players served during World War II. And the late, great Ted Williams served in both World War II and the Korean War. Many including at least 150 minor league players lost their lives while serving our country.

1985 Cy Young Winners
Throwback Thursday: In 1985 Bret Saberhagen and Dwight “Doc” Gooden were named Cy Young award winners.
I started battling against Dwight Gooden since I was 11 and he was 12 years old. My 1st outing against him, he threw a curve ball that was so nasty I and literally fell on my butt. (That was the 1st and only time that happened.)
He grew up playing for Belmont Heights Little League (Tampa) who played against us (Dunedin Little League). We met up several times throughout the years in Little League, State All Stars in Little League, Babe Ruth League, Senior Little League.
I had to face him almost every year including high school (He went to Hillborough High, I went to Dunedin High.)
Eventually I faced him in Puerto Rico in 1992 and worked a walk-off after a 3-2 nasty hammer that buckled me (but not to my knees)!
Once he walked me...it was such a battle on the 4th ball I felt like I hit a home run!
It was always so fun to face him because he was so awesome...it was overwhelming.
Saberhagen was just filthy, nasty, nothing straight, throwing gasoline and knockout sliders. Also one of the top pitchers of his day.
Both of these guys were so much fun to face! If they were on their game, you were done!

What a great experience!
